What the 2024 Marina Alta burglary case says about empty villas

In October 2024 Spain’s Ministry of the Interior announced that the Guardia Civil had dismantled a criminal group specialising in burglaries of homes in the Marina Alta. Seven people were arrested. The operation cleared up 97 burglaries and recovered more than 600 pieces of jewellery, 33 luxury watches, cash, four high-end cars and the tools used in the break-ins.

This is not an article about crime rates, and it is not meant to frighten anyone. Most houses in the Marina Alta are never touched. But a case like this is a useful moment to look at the doors of a home that stands empty for part of the year, which in Dénia is a large share of them.

Why empty homes

The obvious reason: nobody is there to hear anything, and a forced door can go unnoticed for weeks. In Dénia, a University of Alicante housing study counted more second homes and holiday lets than homes lived in all year. From autumn to spring, many of the villas in Les Rotes and on the Montgó are empty.

What actually helps

The weakest door, not the front one. People spend on the front door because it is the one they see. A terrace slider that lifts off its track, or a side door with a basic cylinder, undoes all of it.

A cylinder that resists the common attacks. Snapping and bumping are the ones you hear about. A cylinder rated against them, fitted so it does not stick out from the door, is the basic step.

A strong frame and keep. A good lock in a weak frame fails at the frame.

Knowing who has a key. After years of cleaners, agents and guests, many owners do not. A new cylinder resets the count.

Someone local who checks. A neighbour or an agent who looks at the doors now and then, and who you have authorised to call a locksmith if something is wrong.

What does not help

Worrying about it from abroad, and a sticker on the door. Neither changes what happens when somebody tries the handle.
