## Break-ins: what people want to know

### Police or locksmith: which do I call first?

The police, on 112. They need to see the door as it was left, and their report is what your insurer asks for. Photograph everything as well. Then call us to make the door secure.

### Will the insurance pay for the new lock?

Many home and business policies cover it after a reported break-in, but it depends on yours. You get an itemised invoice that shows what was repaired and why, which is what the claim needs.

### They tried the door but did not get in. Is it worth doing anything?

Yes. A cylinder that has been attacked may still turn but be weakened inside, and marks on the door show that somebody has already chosen it. At the least, have the cylinder looked at.

### What makes a cylinder high-security?

Resistance to the usual attacks: snapping, bumping, drilling and picking, tested to a recognised grade. Fitted with a proper keep and a reinforced frame, it changes how long a door holds.
